Photographic Lighting Workshop
General Course Information:
Our lighting workshop is a fast paced 1 day workshop filled with some lecture and lots of hands-on demonstrations of photographic lighting for both professional and home studios. Students will have the opportunity to "be the photographer" by setting up and adjusting the positions of the lights as well as taking photographs during the demonstrations. Although this is a lighting workshop, we often use a model, student or mannequin as the subject during the hands-on demonstrations. Due to time restraints most of the hands-on demonstrations will be photographed with one of the studio's camera but time permitting (and it often does) students will have the opportunity to use their own cameras for some of the demonstrations.
Students who would like to use their camera during the demonstrations should bring a camera, lens (preferably with a focal length less than 135mm, an 18mm - 55mm and 24mm - 120mm and similar focal lengths are good choices). The lens may be a zoom or fixed focal length with any maximum aperture. Students who will be using a minolta, Konica or Sony camera with a "reverse hot shoe" should bring a hot shoe adapter if they have one. Students who wish to bring a model MUST contact us for permission at least 3 days prior to the workshop. Due to space and time limitations, NOT all models will be accepted or permitted to attend the workshop and will have to leave.
Although we will cover the details of lighting, we also keep this workshop relatively non-technical. We will use studio strobes for most of the demonstrations to save time but we will explain how you can substitute camera flashes or continuous lights (hot lights) for studio strobes.
Course Topics Include:
- How to us flashes or continuous lights instead of studio strobes.
- Benefits and drawbacks to using Flashes, studio strobes and continuous lights.
- Using lighting diagrams.
- Using a single strobe, flash or continuous lighting unit.
- Multiple strobes flash or continuous lighting units.
- Flat (Even lighting) vs. Ratio (Uneven) lighting.
- "Beauty" lighting.
- Hard and soft lighting.
- Using soft boxes, umbrellas, reflectors, snoots and other equipment.
- Eliminating shadows and embracing shadows, when are shadows good and when are they bad.
- Directional vs. non-directional lighting.
- Do I need to use manual focus or manual exposure? We will answer this question...if you cannot wait the answer is: with the right equipment no you don't.
- More.
